The sugar cane sector is an agricultural activity which generated 1.278 billion gourdes (HYPPOLITE, 2005). Given its enormous importance, we chose to carry out this research work on its contribution to reducing food insecurity in the commune of Saint-Marc, in Lalouère, from 2017 to 2022. The general objective of this work is to show the importance of sugar cane in reducing food insecurity in Lalouère. To achieve the purposes of this study, we used a simple method to achieve our intended objective. First, a prospecting survey was carried out. Secondly, an in-depth survey was carried out where 30 producers out of a population of 100 were surveyed.
The sector is facing many difficulties; however, the results of this study show that the main players in the sugar cane sector including producers, producer-processors are very interested in it. Sugarcane is transformed into two products in Lalouère: syrup and clairin (Author’s investigation, November 2023). The “kann anana” variety is used as cane and that of Hasco, for processing. One hectare of land planted with sugar cane brings in an average income of 1,200,000 gourdes for the sale of clairin, 1,062,500 gourdes for the sale of cane and an income of 480,000 gourdes for the sale of syrup. The gross profit made by Lalouère producers is 886,716.67 gourdes in the sale of clairin, 618,854.58 gourdes in the sale of cane and 180,041.74 gourdes for the sale of syrup during a cane agricultural campaign to-sugar.
The sale of clairin and the sale of cane bring in more profit than the sale of syrup in Lalouère. The profit made by producers in Lalouère really proves that this crop has great importance in reducing food insecurity. Then, it is a source of jobs and income since on average 55 people work in the processing workshops, with a salary of 650 gourdes per day, which totals an amount of 5,144,000.00 gourdes in six (6) months.
